Kate Owens, the dynamic powerhouse charged with leading a hybrid salon of more than 40 stylists, founded Kate’s Kuts in 2011 and hasn’t slowed down since. After her youngest son Waylon was diagnosed with Autism in 2016, Kate did the opposite of give up. Instead, she dove headfirst and led her family through years of intensive therapies and research-based strategies to improve Waylon’s quality of life. Not only does she speak at school board meetings and encourage local advocates by being a voice of change. Kate has brought to light and taken action to help a serious need within the world of special needs. Individuals like Waylon were struggling to do everyday tasks in life, such as having a haircut. For 5 years, Kate’s Kuts has been providing complementary services on Sundays to individuals with sensory issues. Her mission to provide a safe space for her son to receive a haircut with dignity, led to the creation of the 501c3, “The Sensory Safe Salon and Spa”. The Sensory Safe Salon and Spa Staff are now delivering trainings to stylists with heart inspired by their mission to provide a safe salon experience to customers who have special needs by teaching behavioral techniques and desensitizing strategies which lead to a successful salon experience for all. Our 2-hour course is designed to help you provide sensory-safe haircuts and salon/barbering services to individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), and other sensory differences. By enrolling in our comprehensive course, you’ll delve into defining and understanding autism, sensory processing, and the differences between behaviors and stimming. You’ll also be provided with tools and systems that will help you develop your best practices by reflecting on the course materials and personalizing the information to meet the needs of your guests and families. Upon completion of the course, you’ll be recognized as a Certified Sensory-Safe Provider, and your name will be added to our website, which is developed to assist individuals and families in locating a sensory-safe industry professional, along with a display certification. You’ll learn to respond in a way that creates trust not trauma, and we guide you towards refining your talents by making restraints obsolete.
